San Mateo: City Council to Hold Dispensary Regulation Study Session

The San Mateo City Council on Monday, October 20th will consider an ordinance to join a California trend by regulating medical cannabis dispensaries. The council is scheduled to study the idea and create a draft ordinance at its Monday meeting, but it will make no formal decision. The ordinance would likely require medical marijuana dispensaries to register through the Police Department and meet certain security and business regulations. The council has been looking to consider such an ordinance after the Police Department and federal agents raided and shut down three dispensaries last year.
The ordinance would likely require collectives to register with the Police Department and to obtain a license from the city. It would also likely include provivions attempting to address safety and security. It will require security lighting, alarms and that the cannabis be grown indoors.
Medical cannabis advocates gathered to protest last year's raids at a council meeting, asked for assistance in easily accessing their treatment. Some called on the council to pass a non-conformity ordinance that declares the city will not comply with federal law that prohibits all marijuana use.
