San Francisco Medical Marijuana Week 2008 - Wrap Up

Hello Bay Area Medical Cannabis Community,

Last week was the most successful Medical Cannabis Awareness Week since ASA got the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to recognize it in legislation in 2002! Hundreds of patients participated and we educated dozens of new supporters!

On Sunday, February 10th, we graduated 20 patient-students from Medical Cannabis University, who received diplomas and graduation caps for their hard work and effort. Thanks again to professors Joe Elford, Rigel Christian and Kevin Patchett.

The very next day, ASA SF Core members Sarah Shrader and Brent Saupe gave a free legal training at which over 30 patients learned their constitutional rights and developed skills on how to deal with a raid situation.

On Wednesday, Oaksterdam University kicked out the mystery with a Sneak Preview of an unreleased medical marijuana film.

For Valentine's Day, over 50 patients participated in the 5th Annual ASA SF Valentine's Day Spread the Love Seed Planting to deliver a special Valentine to mayor Gavin Newsom. The Valentine asked him to write a letter to Governor Schwarzenegger asking for his support, to write a letter to Congressman Conyers asking the Judiciary Committee to hold stand alone hearings on the DEA's tactics, and to make a public statement in support of landlords who lease to dispensaries in San Francisco. The Valentine also stated that if patients lost safe access to medical cannabis because of his inaction, we will ask him to personally grow the medicine for us. The 20 plants were given to him to start him off.

On Friday, 350 Divisiadero hosted Unity in the Community, a fun-filled evening of entertainment, food and education.

On Saturday, long-time patient advocate Charlie Pappas organized a FREE all-day movie screening that was, ahem, patient friendly!

Finally, on Sunday we decompressed at the 5th Annual 215 Party. Pam-Pam and the Pimps for Peace kicked off the night with some randy Reggae sounds, followed by DJ Selekta Lou who flowed like a river. Natural Element, a diverse and talented 7 piece Reggae band, played original tracks and old movement favorites. Finally, Jonathan took us into the wee hours of the night with his smooth saxophone stylings.Over 100 patients turned out and a several won door prizes of CDs, books, posters, and other great items!

Congratulations to Patient Community Service Award Winners Sarah Shrader, Jaimie, Justin, Christina, David Goldman, Nancy Olson and Robert O'Mally.

A special shout out to Collective Community Service Award Winners Nor-Cal Herbal Relief Cooperative, Re-Leaf Herbal Center, BASA Collective, and the Green Door for their incredible support for patients' rights and their quality of care.

Here's to another year of safe access!

In Solidarity,

Alex Franco
