SF Dept. Of Public Health To Outlaw Certain Types Of Edible Medical Cannabis Products

By The Green Cross
Published February 25, 2009

To Our Valued Patients, Patient Caregivers, and to all Allies of the Medical Cannabis Community,

We at The Green Cross are committed to providing a wide array of medicine to our patients, including edible medical cannabis products. Edible medical cannabis products are a safe alternative to smoking medical cannabis and are preferred by many patients. The San Francisco Department of Public Health is considering enacting a policy that would prohibit San Francisco medical cannabis dispensaries from making or providing certain types of edible cannabis products, including candies, truffles, chocolates, and lozenges to patients.

The Department of Public Health has always been reasonable and responsible with regards to medical cannabis community outreach. The Department takes very seriously patient concerns and requests. Recently, a representative from the Department contacted The Green Cross to inform us of this possible change of policy and to give us a chance to explain why they should not ban these edibles. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Patients should be allowed to keep these products as an option for medicating. We need to flood the Department of Public Health’s email inbox, fax machine, and mail box with individual letters from patients, caregivers, and allies like you explaining why these products are important to you and your health.

Please help us keep all options open for all patients- please help by reaching out to the Department of Public Health. Below we have included the contact information (mailing address, email, fax number, phone number) for Inspector Kessler at the Department of Public Health, as well as an example of a letter that you can use as a guide. But remember, personal and unique letters will be most effective in convincing the Department of Public Health to forgo this prohibition.

Thank you. As always, we appreciate your continued patronage of The Green Cross and your support of the San Francisco Medical Cannabis Community.

Sincerely,
The Green Cross Staff

Dear Senior Inspector Kessler,

I am writing to request your support for the continued availability of certain types of edible cannabis products, including candies, truffles, chocolates, and lozenges. Patients should be allowed to keep these products as an options for medicating.

These products are important to because

In addition:
  • Many patients who suffer from a condition for which medical use of cannabis is deemed appropriate and has been recommended by a physician relay on cannabis edibles as a safe alternative to smoking cannabis, and prefer those types of edibles that you plan to prohibit.
  • These products are available only through medical cannabis dispensaries, and carry prominent warning labels. In addition, members of the medical cannabis community go to great lengths to keep such products out of the reach of non-patients and children at all times.

Please do not create a policy to limit certain types of edible cannabis products.

Sincerely,
